It moves around on its own, and sucking it up is honestly pretty satisfying. There isn't really much to miss out on if you opt out of playing this game, but if you're looking for something short and sweet then go ahead and give The Gunk a try. The gunk itself is effectively-rendered, and it kind of looks like writhing, diseased jello. I wouldn't say it's worth the full price of £20, however, pick it up on sale if you want to. It's free on game pass which is how I played it, or you can buy it. Overall, The Gunk is a solid game that I'd say to try out if you get the chance. The visuals are great, the soundtrack is especially good, the story is mediocre at best and the gameplay is okay. After landing your ship, the Dust Bunny, Becks. Set on an untouched exotic planet, you take control of space-scrapper, Rani, as she and her partner Becks search for valuable resources to pay off their mounting debt. Other than that, I don't really have any complaints about The Gunk. The Gunk is an action-adventure caper from the creators of the SteamWorld franchise, releasing as a day-one drop on Game Pass. There was no real reason to do this - it just drags things on and makes things boring. The game throws so much gunk at you - and I get it, you clean, that's the point of the game, but this felt more like a chore than gameplay. I didn't find it all that mind-numbing until the later stages. The gameplay consists of: cleaning and a little bit of effortless fighting here and there. Another issue I have with The Gunk is how tedious it can get after awhile. If you've ever played any game then I'm sure you'll have come across a plot similar to this one. You begin to realise that what you were searching for is reduced to nothing when compared to this monolith of a discovery, so, naturally, your primary focus shifts to this new discovery. You go to some unknown, unfamiliar location in search of something specific, however, you find yourself getting mixed up in something far bigger than you could have ever imagined. It's a fairly generic story, allow me to explain why I think this. If I go any deeper I'll spoil it so I'll leave it that. As you progress you'll find there's a lot more to this planet than what you see on a surface level. However, you discover a strange 'gunk' that pollutes the planet and decide to focus on freeing the planet of it's grasp. Essentially, you're a broke space traveller who landed on an alien planet in the hopes of finding a potent source of energy to sell. The story is interesting but I wouldn't say it feels all that special. Each area becomes 10x more special once the music kicks in and it really helps in enhancing levels that would otherwise feel uninspired. The soundtrack is absolutely fantastic and is arguably my favourite aspect of the entire game. The art style and visuals are gorgeous - the saturated colours, fantastic lighting effects and diverse locations allow each level to look and feel fresh. 70% Xbox OneThe Gunk is a short, charming and enjoyable exploration game. Some adventure games send you off to save the universe and others challenge you to best a great evil.
